District Profile

 

 

The West Independent School District (ISD) is a public school district based in West, Texas. The district was founded in 1892 after Professor William Allen pushed for city officials to form the West Public School System. That year, West Elementary School was constructed on North Harrison Street. In both 1905 and 1909, the school building had to be enlarged to accommodate the growing high school grade levels. 

 

In 1923, West High School and the Dunbar School were established, and by 1927, organized sports, especially West High Bulldog football, helped bring school spirit to the town. In 1930, the West Bulldogs team and Coach H. J. Kozelski voted to change the school mascot to the Trojans. The school colors were also changed from orange and black to today's mighty red and black. 

 

West is located 21 miles north of Waco, Texas. In addition to West, the district serves the towns of Leroy, Tours, Gerald, and Ross in northern McLennan County. A small portion of Hill County lies within the district as well. The West ISD attendance boundary covers 126.6 square miles. 

 

Currently, West ISD serves approximately 1,300 students over three campuses. The three campuses are: West Elementary School (Prekindergarten through Grade 5), West Middle School (Grades 6-8), and West High School (Grades 9-12). The Grades 6-12 students are served on one comprehensive campus that opened in August 2016. In August 2022, the new West Elementary School opened just southeast of the West Middle and High School campus. Over 200 staff members serve on the West ISD team. 

 

While West ISD is steeped in tradition and history, it is also a district of innovation with a rigorous curriculum and instructional plan and acclaimed, varied, and numerous extracurricular activities. West ISD truly excels on the local, state, and national levels in the areas of academics, agriculture, the arts, and athletics.
